Ergothioneine (EGT), also written as L-ergothioneine, is a naturally occurring, sulfur-containing amino acid derivative — chemically, the trimethylbetaine of L-histidine carrying a thione group at the C-2 position of the imidazole ring. It was first isolated in 1909 from the ergot fungus Claviceps purpurea, and it is now recognised as one of the most researched next-generation antioxidant ingredients for cosmetics, functional foods and dietary supplements.
Humans and other vertebrates cannot synthesise ergothioneine.
